Spring feelings in dogs

3/6/2019

When it starts to get warmer, we all notice our furry fellas start getting spring feelings.
Everything around us is growing, the sun is shining, and our dogs suddenly start acting crazy.

A few weeks ago I started to notice Rio was more excited than usual. Even if we go for two hour walks and play fetch hours on end, he is never tired. But our dogs are not only excited, their hormones are going crazy in this time.

So what can we do in these situations as dog owners?

  1. Try to not overexcite him in this time. If he gets really excited in the car, when he sees other dogs or in other situations, try to limit these interactions as much as possible.
  2. Find a healthy way to get rid of all that excitement. Play fetch, go on a bike ride or do anything your dog enjoys but doesn’t excite him over the edge.
  3. If your male dog is not castrated, this time of the year will bring you more problems than the others. He will jump on every female dog every chance he gets. Either consider getting him sterilized, or get him a castration chip or simply keep him away from the female dogs until he is calming down again.
  4. So now on to the female dogs. They usually get in heat in the spring, try to reduce her stress levels and be careful not to visit dog parks or other places where there are dogs off leash.
  5. Lastly, don’t punish your dog for being in a happy spring-mode. He is just overly happy the long and cold winter is finally over, so are you, so just try to enjoy it and have fun with it. Soon the spring time will be over anyways, so just be patient and always stay calm.
