Something I have been wondering since I picked up my dog four years ago, is that how much exercise is really enough?
I go on walks and play fetch every day with my dog and we go usually in the morning for an hour, in the afternoon for a longer walk probably around half an hour and in the evening for a short walk. He seems tired when he comes home and sleeps most of the time, but is it really enough exercise in a day? My dog is a Labrador/ Golden Retriever/ Collie/ Australian Shepherd- Mix.
It all really depends on the breed of your dog, the age and size. For an example, a Labrador of two years of age would need in most cases more running time in a day than a eight year old Chihuahua.
In my opinion you can put different dog breeds in categories, like the most hyperactive dogs to the more laid back couch potatoes. Examples of dog breeds from high to low exercise needs.
The most hyperactive dog breeds:
Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, American Staffordshire Terrier, Siberian Husky & Jack Russel Terrier
Expect a daily exercise need of 2-3 hours, they love playing with a ball but in most cases they enjoy having a task like herding sheep.
Dog breeds with a high to moderate need of exercise:
Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Dalmatian, English Springer Spaniel, Poodle, German Shepherd
Expect a daily exercise need of 1,5-2 hours, they enjoy getting rid of that excess energy by playing with other dogs, playing fetch and running next to your bike.
Dog breeds that don't need much exercise in a day:
English Bulldog, Pekingese, Pug, Havanese, Shih Tzu, Mastiff, Basset Hound & Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
These dog breeds need an exercise amount of up to 1 hour a day. They enjoy relaxed walks and love laying next to you on the couch.
